Humpf

I am 20
And the
Mother of
My domestic
Partner is washing
Dishes in the kitchen,
I am talking with friends
In the next room and she
Is unhappy her grown daughter
Has chosen to live with me so each
Time I say anything Mother loudly
Says Humpf so I tell the story of
The most beautiful animal who
Once roamed the earth but
Who was vain and refused
To be polite to the other
Animals who all took
Their hurt feelings
To God who said
Tell the most
Beautiful
Animal
To get
Real
And be
Polite or else
God would put
A humpf on them
But the most beautiful
Animal just chewed it over
And said humpf at which point
A huge humpf appeared on
Their back which is there
Today on every camel
But no loud humpf
Came from the
Kitchen nor
Any loud
Sound
Of pots or
Pans only silence
Which made my domestic
Partner smile at her mother’s
Chagrined lack of any response
Except to mutter later on I am just
So disappointed in my very own
Daughter’s lack of good
Judgement but my
Domestic partner
Just smiled as
She had won
And always
Would in
The age
Old game
Of mothers
And daughters.
