Girls

I am 60ish
At home reading
Early afternoon when
The doorbell rings and I open
The door to find a passel of little
Girls all under ten who are up to
Something as they squirm to
And fro most avoiding eye
Contact except their one
Spokesperson a cute
Little girl who slowly
Asks me if it would
Be ok with me if
She and her
Friends
Used
My driveway
To color with chalk?
I am delighted at their
Enthusiasm to draw so agree
It is fine and go ahead and
Draw as they please as
Neither my nor my
Wife’s car is in
The driveway
And I read
On until
I hear
My
Wife’s voice
Returning home
Call me from the front
Door where we gaze at a
Chalk drawing better than a
Chagall meets Grandma
Moses of scenes of
Play held together
By the theme a
Wonderful
Piece of
Chalk
Art
Covering
The entire
Driveway drawn
By half a dozen little
Girls proud of their work.
I have to carry the groceries
From the street to the house but
It is worth it to see the girls walk
By to admire their creation and
Within weeks the rain clears
The palate like putting a
Slate rock tablet with
White beeswax on
One side by a fire
Creates a tabula
Raza blank
Slate on
Which
To draw
A memory
For a lifetime.
A place to put a
Lever or a piece of
Chalk and they will all
Move the world one day
One driveway art at a time.
