Target

I am at 74
Diabetic with
Heart problems
And a plethora of
Other injuries internal
The prime target of the
COVID-19 virus but seem
To have dodged what kills
Mainly older adults with just
My underlying health problems
Except I am not a fat out of shape
Smoker with a taste for alcohol and
Non-prescription drugs whereas so
Many who have died or come too
Close to death were targets for
The virus and I wonder if any
Are better off with a quick
Death than lingering in
Some geriatric prison
Drugged into stupor
Kept alive to feed
A care industry
Which does
Not care
For the
Dignity
Of the elderly
Or the quality of
Life human or otherwise.
But, once we industrialized
Cruelty to our animals for whom
We are supposed to be stewards
Then why surprise at cruelty to
The elderly, I know if I were in
Some living hell called an
Old age home I would
Welcome any escape
Even COVID-19 rather
Than wait for my
Insurance to
Run out to
Be sent
To die
Alone
Out
Of sight.
Better a target
Than a statistic
Unable to regain
My illusion of freedom
Which is to decide myself.
