Chapultepec

I am 19 walking
In Chapultepec
Park like a character
In a Diego Rivera
Mural looking for
The heart of the
Mexican people.
Is it a mother with
A skull face, an
Indian woman or
The Aztec snake
Woman with a
Necklace of hands
And hearts; or, is it
The faces of the
Children wide-eyed
In wonder at the
Trinkets, toys, snacks
And drinks vended
Here with the chance
To dream of a better
Life than what they have.
It is not a big dream,
Only a little hope for
Something better than
What they have now.
Newer shoes, clothes,
Better food and for the
Smartest access to a
Higher education and
Opportunities for gainful
Employment in Mexico.
Not too big a dream for
Such a loving people
To hope for in their life.
I drank the water ate the
Bread breathed the air
And it took my heart,
Mind, body, and soul.
I will always remember
Those dreams on the
Faces in Chapultepec
Park in Mexico City
In the summer of 1965.
They are there now,
Waiting for their dreams.
They will not wait much
Longer for what is theirs,
Pan y trabajo y libertad,
Seguridad para todos.
