Pie

I am twelve baking
My first apple pie,
I have watched my
Elder sisters bake an
Apple pie so I know
The basic steps.
My elder sister is
Busy elsewhere,
My younger sister
Is equally uninterested.
I preheat the oven to 425F
Make the dough and
Roll it out in two circles.
I peel the apples and add
Sugar, butter, cinnamon,
Flour, nutmeg and lemon rind
Assembling the apple slices
On one of the dough circles in
A glass pie pan but then cut
The upper crust into inch wide
Strips which I braid into a delicate
Lattice crisscrossing the dough
Over under then slide the pie
Into the oven with a cookie sheet
Under it for drips taking it
Out of the oven later to
Cool on a pie rack.
Then I go play
Outside until
Supper and
My pie
Is
Gone
In seconds,
Something of
An anti-climax but
With a bit of appreciation
From my sibs and smiles from
My parents who favorably
Comment on my first
Efforts to help
Fix an apple pie.
I sort of figured if
I fixed it then I
Should eat it.
Not the
Case.
But
It
Was
Fun to
Make and
I do get a big
Slice of pie.
I still like
The
Trade-off.
