Bee

I am fortyish
Driving eastward
Across the Pecos headed
For Ozona on a two-lane highway
When suddenly I hear a bump
Bump bump bump and the
Windshield turns yellow
So I cannot see out
So I break to a
Stop open my
Car door to
A roar of
Bumble
Bees
So thick
In the air
I cannot see
So I shut the door
And manage to clean
Off the windshield using
Water sprayed and wipers
Then drive slowly forward until
The bumblebees thin out and
At the next gas station I fill
Up as the attendant looks
At my yellow pollen car
And says only bumble
Bees which I then
Repeat, he says
They are as
Thick as a
Dense fog
Of yellow
Pollen, I
Agree.
The desert
Has many surprises
From Marfa lights to the
Green mist west of San Antonio
But the yellow pollen cloud
Of bumblebees roaring
Is unforgettable even
After seventy years
Driving in west
Texas day
Or night
Each
Bee
Big and
Yellow black
The roar deafening.
