Late

I am 74
Sitting in
My car as
The rain falls
Gently at sunrise
In front of the repair
Shop but the lights are
Off and the folks are late
To work on Monday morning
So when a light goes on inside
I saunter in smiling at all the
Defensive looks and replies
Which we all resort when
In the wrong but I smile
And ask for their help
Which they gladly
Give as a chance
To regain their
Moral higher
Ground and
We settle
Down to
Resolve
My car
Bump
Over
Hot
Coffee.
Our emotional
Child never leaves
Us and we react as
That child our first impulse
Remains at the age of four to
Smile or frown before our
Adult mind can set the
Proper tone for each
Encounter but the
Child is there
Always and
Eager to
Smile
Back
If it is OK.
Age and guile
Always overcome
Youth and enthusiasm
Even in a petulant inner child.
