Library

I am 15
Checking
Out books with
My mother at the San
Pedro Branch Library waiting
In line in front talking with her about
Authors and literature when the
Librarian tells me I am not
Allowed to check out
Biographies as
They are not
Children’s
Books
But
From the
Adult section
Which I find amusing
So turning to my mother
Behind me in line I passed
Her the books in question for
Her to check out which she does
To the annoyance of the librarian
Who feels books of this type
Should only be read by
Those she thinks old
Enough to be able
To bear the raw
Truth of books
That touch on
Emotions or
Actions of
An adult
World
Unknown
In theory to
Teens my age
Who most likely
Would find them
Dull as it’s 1961 and
America is entering a
Sexual revolution that
Will peak with the wide
Spread use of the pill and
Result in a change in the basic
Structure of the American family
So maybe the librarian was
Prescient but revolutions
Occur from raised
Expectations
Unfulfilled
Not from
Novels
Read
By
Teens.
Birth control
Pills in the hands
Of children power the
Revolution of social
And of economic
Even political
Change but
Not human
Nature in
Novels.
Bosoms
Heave rapiers
Are drawn even
Great literature is
Written while society
Shakes watching
The family form
Shatter along
With the
Middle
Class.
Riots in
Portland?
Well ... duh.
