Compassion
I am in
The express
Checkout line
At a local grocery
I ask the elderly man
Behind me in line if he has
Had many electric outages in
This area during hurricanes and
He looks at my daily uniform of
Khaki shorts a black T-shirt
Black prosthetics leg and
Foot then tells me only
For a few days rarely
As we chat but as I
Am checking out
He tells the lady
Checker to put
My groceries
On his bill so
I tell him I
Am not a
Veteran
My
Wounds
Are civilian
So he relents
And lets me pay
Which is why I love
Texas folks and style
They always step up to
Do right as they see it and
I think of General Lee’s
Comment that the
Texans in his
Army were
His shock
Troops
Who if a
Thing had
To be done
Surely would.
Hurrah for Texans
And their compassion.
I feel at home here on a lake,
Eva road west Davis road East
In Montgomery County
Not far from Liendo
The home of
Elisabet
Ney
Who also
Liked Texans.
