Toledo

I am 60
Or so out
Of breath as
I climb the great
Hill in Toledo upon
Which sits a cathedral
With a view of the river
Looping around the city
Then I walk down to the old
Visigothic garden by the river
Where I find the inscriptions of
Visigothic masons primitive
By comparison to Roman
As the west Goths live
In the ruins of the old
Roman Empire they
Collapsed when
The Roman
Elite land
Owners
Opted
To dump
Roman taxes
For a cheaper alliance
With the Germanic invaders
Bringing on the Dark Ages and
Hence the primitive inscriptions
I am looking at in the old royal
Visigothic garden in Toledo
Their capital in central
Spain a land where it
Is said large armies
Starve and small
Armies are
Defeated
But here
In this
Garden
I find a few
Minutes of peace
To contemplate how
Possessing a thing often
Destroys it holding too tight.
States like people have a
Life from start to finish
And make the same
Mistakes people
Do of hubris
Failing to
Enjoy
Life
One day
At a time and
Chisel within the lines.
