Deep End

My two little
Granddaughters
Are 3 and 4 going
For a swim or at least
A wade in my backyard
Pool for the first time with
Their grandma Lindy already
In the pool the youngest runs to
The edge and jumps into the deep
End then surfaces all splashing arms
And legs as she cannot yet swim so
My wife helps her to the side to bit
By bit work her clinging way to
The shallow end while the
Four-year-old heads for
The shallow end steps
To slowly work her
Way one step at
A time into the
Water but as
The years
Pass by
Both
Master
My five-foot
And three-foot
Deep backyard
Pool and by the time
They are 13 and 14 they
Are too sophisticated to swim
Or wade in grandpa’s little pool.
But, on a hot day it was a cool
Place to linger in the water
As the adults talked on
The covered back
Porch keeping
An eye on
Two kids
In the
Pool.
