Gracious

I am 67
Looking at
The books in
The White House
Library attending a staff
Function my son has asked me
If I would like to come along when a
Staffer appears telling me my son
Wants me upstairs confiding to
Me that my son is the old man
Of the White House since he
Has been here longer than
Anybody else so I tell him
I’m the old man’s old
Man but we are in
A rush and when
I meet my son
We turn a
Corner
And
There is
The President
And First Lady on
A low stage a half foot up
Which with my cane was a bit
Difficult to step up but Mrs. Obama
Stepped forward to help me then
In a group photo she graciously
Held my right forearm pinning
Me in place with her other
Arm to steady me as we
All four had our photo
Taken and I told her
My wife wanted
Me to tell her
Thank you
For the
Job
Mrs. Obama
And her husband
Had done later telling
The President the same
Thing trying not to say too
Much or shake his hand too
Tightly but what I recall most
Is the gracious conduct of
The First Lady who did
Not have to attend a
Function just for
Staff but did so
Anyway out of
I suppose a
Sense of
Duty I
Admire
In both the
Presidential couple.
It is a humbling experience
To see power handled elegantly
With grace and courtesy and duty.
