Janitor

I am 14
Attending
A Presbyterian
Church in Texas
Though they are a
Bit miffed when I tell
Them I do not have to
Care what they think only
What God thinks according
To predestination but I am helping
The church janitor as I believe one
Should work from the bottom not
Come in at the top so he has a
Job for me sweeping the long
Hall which I do until I raise
The broom handle to
Pick something out
Of the brush and
The handle taps
A light fixture
Breaking it
But the
Janitor
Says to me
That’s all right
You were working.
A lesson I have never
Forgotten to extend to
Those whom I worked with
Or supervised and a good
Idea in these days of
Accusations over
Understanding
Forgiveness
Willingness
To listen
Human
Compassion.
Easy to blame
Easy to bluster
Not so easy to be
Quiet and admit there
But for God’s mercy go I.
