I am 74
Reading
In my comfy
Wheelchair which
Rolls so easily from desk
To coffee table to TV listening
To my friend relate that the nice
Lady who comes on Wednesday to
Clean the house and who is ten
Feet away cleaning kitchen
Counters before washing
Clothes and bedding
Never gets sick
Except when
She ate
Some
Cookies
From under
The counter that
My friend’s previous
Roommate had baked
And hidden there so I asked
If said cookies made everybody
Sick but my friend tells me not
Sick but and here words fail
Her so she squints then
Opens her eyes wide
Rolling her head
Laughing so I
Deduce said
Cookies
Were
From a
Recipe by
Sister Mary Juanita
Immaculately prepared
Causing on that occasion
All house cleaning to cease
Due to the humor in everything
At least for the remainder of the
Day and I am sworn to secrecy
About this incident but the
Smile on our cleaning
Lady’s face and her
Wink tells me she
Has been aware
Of those under
The counter
Cookies
Long
Before
The crazy
Day work ended.
The cookies are long
Gone but the secrets of
That day linger so I could
Not resist sharing some cookies
With the esteemed reader
Whose slow smile tells
Me you have some
Idea of such
Cookies
Or can
Free
Your mind
To imagine such.
My cookies preference
Remains almond shortbread.
