Scout’s Honor
I am eight tucking
In my dark blue Scout’s
Shirt into my ragged blue
Jeans patches ironed onto
Both knees then put on my hat
Scout blue ready to run to the
Den mother’s house tying on
My yellow Scout scarf as I
Am eager to be a part of
The scout troop being
Taught the phrase
Scout’s honor an
Idea I suppose
I still cherish
Though an
Adult can
Seldom
Resist
Disparaging
Such a simple
Yet elegant concept
As a person’s honor though
We are taught to honor this or
That how often do we follow
Through keeping faith with
Our conscience as we are
Urged to do with our
Society’s morales
But the Scout’s
Honor trumps
Mere morales
Just as our ethics
Do since morals vary
Society to society whereas
Ethics transcend societies as
Expressed in an eight year
Old boy’s resolution to
Conduct himself as
A Scout and bear
In mind the one
Principle of
Scout’s
Honor,
A simple
Elegant belief
That honor matters
More than wealth
Power or fame
And is like
Virtue it’s
Own reward,
Scout’s honor.
