Reflection
I am standing on the
Beach around Acapulco
Bay at night staring into
A round pool of dark water
At the reflection of the
Stars and constellations,
I have just been swimming
In the shark-infested bay
And am lucky to be alive.
I am tired after a long last
Day in Acapulco as
Tomorrow my friend Paul
And I bus back to his
Family in Mexico City where
We have spent several weeks.
I will start college in a week and
Lie down on the sand to stargaze.
A young American woman my
Age sits down beside me
And we talk and stare at
The stars together then
Kiss and embrace as
The night is dark and
We are alone on the
Sandy beach and
Find comfort in
Each other’s
Warmth.
I awake just before dawn and
Try to find my shirt and socks
And shoes while my companion
Sleeps then wakes with a
Start jumping up and
Dashing off some
Where in a hurry.
I wonder that
We were so
Tired we
Fell
Asleep and only woke as
The Sky first brightened.
I hurry to the room I
Share with Paul
To pack and
Catch our
Bus
But I am thinking of the girl
On the beach who lay
With me and traded
Caresses under the
Stars and talked to
Me about her
Dreams and
Whose scent
Still lingers
On my
Fingers and tongue and
Whom I will never see,
Touch or taste again
Though the memory
Of her has never
Left me and is
A reflection of
Our shared
Passion.
Neither of us
Is yet aware
Of the sand
Fleas
Who
Made us their
Late night
Snack.
